This book, by the great MiMo architect Norman Giller and Sarah Giller Nelson is a must read for MiMo fans. Among many other things, Mr. Giller pioneered the development of the two story motel-clearly the enduring image of Biscayne Boulevard. There are Giller-and GIller inspired buildings along Biscayne.

The University Press of Florida is pleased to
announce the publication of Designing the Good
Life: Norman M. Giller and the Development of
Miami Modernism, by Norman M. Giller and Sarah
Giller Nelson. With 76 color photos and 80 b&w
photos this fascinating book offers a unique
personal account of the evolution of Miami
Modernism, or MiMo, the exuberant, subtropical
strain of mid-century architecture that defined
an era.

Giller made an indelible mark on the urban
landscape with architecturally progressive
structures ideally suited to their surroundings.
His projects reflect every major social and
cultural trend that characterized the postwar
period, from suburban housing projects to
expansive supermarkets to swanky hotels.
Discussing technologies, materials, and the key
elements of MiMo, Designing the Good Life offers
an insider's view. The authors delve into Miami's
architectural history to examine some of Giller's
most iconic structures, including the Diplomat
Hotel, the Ocean Palm Motel, the Carillon Hotel,
the North Shore Band Shell, and the Giller
Building. Vintage images from the architect's
exclusive collection and contemporary photographs
by Miami photographer Robin Hill lavishly
illustrate each project description.

The only book to chronicle MiMo's evolution from
the perspective of one of its most distinguished
exponents, Designing the Good Life reveals how
Giller's vision helped to shape Florida
architecture in the Atomic Age.

Designing the Good Life: Norman M. Giller and the
Development of Miami Modernism is available in
