Past Events Fall of 2007, we began our ever-growing list of events with our first book signing of "Designing the Good Life" at Moonchine Asian Bistro. We were graced with the presence of then 90 year old architect, Norman Giller, Sarah Giller Nelson, co-author and grand-daughter and their lovely family. It was a historic evening and opening for the District which contains Giller architecture. During that month, we joined in and helped the District come together for the successful Chop Shop Hope Center Charity Event. Since then we have presented two very successful Cinco de MiMo Street Festivals, A Taste of MiMo, MiMoWEEN, Miami Expose` the faces of Miami by artist Louis Dalmau, and brought the Coppertone Girl Sign to the MiMo District. The Coppertone Girl Sign was installed with a grand celebration under the sign in the Smiling Pets space bringing the neighborhood, businesses and visitors together for a party hosted by MiMo restaurants Moonchine, Casa Toscana, Red Light Little River, Soyka, Moshi-Moshi, UVA69, and Le Café. Other sponsors were Urban Icons, and Bacardi. Tropical Signs of Florida, Hialeah did a fantastic job removing, restoring and installing her just in time for Miami ART Week December 2008. Debbie O'Hanian, owner of what we now call the Coppertone Building at 7300 Biscayne, graciously gave her northern wall for the girl's new home. Jerry Bengis of Bengis Fine Art, whose family's company and dad, Moe Bengis originally built the Sign in 1959 (3 blocks outside what is now the MiMo District) was instrumental in obtaining the funding from Coppertone Corp./Shering-Plough Healthcare who paid the entire cost of removal, restoration and installation of the Sign. The City of Miami stepped up to the plate on this project and helped us get over the hurdles to get her designed historic and permitted and for that, we are forever grateful. The MiMo Association completed this "feel good" project in a relatively short period. and is extremely proud to have this amazing historic icon of the MiMo period gracing the MiMo District for all to enjoy.
